Children in Need

I came over all domestic goddess the other night.  Our office has organised a ‘bake off’ for Children in Need – bring something in, and make a donation if you want a slice/piece of cake/biscuit/whatever has been brought in.  I decided this year to make an effort and actually do some baking, and made Dutch Apple Cake.

I remember my mum making this cake when I was younger, I absolutely loved it. It’s a recipe from Evelyn Rose’s Jewish Cookbook, and the cake is really moist and juicy, with cooked apple, cinnamon and sugar on top which goes kind of caramel-y and crunchy and gooey (if it can be crunchy and gooey at the same time).  When I rang my mum for the recipe she said ‘don’t you want something easier’?  But to be honest it wasn’t that hard, the only downside being I used the wrong sized dish so it was a bit thin.

I was very proud of myself when I took it out of the oven – it looked like proper Dutch Apple Cake, ‘just like my mum used to make’!  And it tastes fab (in my own humble opinion!).  I’m pleased to report that having sneaked a peek in the office kitchen, it seems to be pretty popular as it’s nearly all gone and it’s barely time for elevenses. :-)

I would bake more often, it’s very therapeutic (especially licking the bowl) but sadly, if I bake a cake it then means I have to eat it and that way tight-clothing lies…but at least this time I had a good reason – it’s all for charidee luvvies!  Go on – go and donate some money now!
